What does "fasting" mean, and for what tests is it necessary?

"Fasting" means to abstain from all food and drink for 12 to 14 hours prior to the test. When we eat a meal before a scheduled test, it can significantly affect the parameters and test results. The only thing allowed is to drink water. Before the test, you can drink a glass of still mineral water. It is not allowed to consume coffee, tea, juice or water with additives.

Fasting - what does it mean?

Fasting: What Does It Mean? The term "fasting" means that on the day when the laboratory tests are due, you cannot eat any food or drink coffee or tea. The only thing allowed is a glass of mineral still water. The exception to this rule is taking medications prescribed by a doctor. Fasting is used in the case of laboratory tests, or in the case of an operation or surgery. Eating any food may bias the test results. What's more, you should eat an easily digestible dinner on the eve of the planned research.

Fasting blood test

An fasting blood test is normal procedure. All sampling takes place in the morning. The day before the examination, eat the last meal until 6 p.m. and refrain from consuming any food and drinks, except water, until the blood is drawn. Water is permitted in small amounts, and is even advisable, as it helps to draw blood. In the event that patients are taking medications, dietary supplements or other preparations, the nurse or staff at the registration office should be notified of this. Eating and drinking before the planned tests affect the test results, so it is so important to strictly follow the recommendations regarding preparation for the test.

Fasting glucose, which is a blood sugar test

Fasting glucose is done to check blood sugar levels. Before taking the sample, you should refrain from consuming food and drink for at least 12 hours. Drinking coffee and eating breakfast just before the test may significantly increase the sugar level, which means that the test result will be unreliable. It is worth complying with fasting in this case - we will make sure that the results will not be distorted.

For glucose testing in children, there must be an interval of at least 6 hours from the last meal. Elevated sugar levels in children and adults may be one of the two types of diabetes. Conversely, a level that is too low indicates hypoglycemia . Fasting blood sugar testing is recommended for all pregnant women, diabetics and people who are suspected of having diabetes.

Fasting insulin: indications for the study

Testing insulin levels requires special preparation from patients. In order for the results to be correct, it is recommended not to drink alcohol for 2 to 3 days before the test. Moreover, as in all tests, one should not eat or drink for at least 12 hours prior to the collection. The indication for fasting insulin testing is suspicion of insulin resistance , diabetes or pre-diabetes. In addition, in the case of insulin resistance, your doctor may order fasting insulin and blood glucose tests simultaneously.
